My Life as a Musician

By: Josh Lewis

Sometimes I have a hard time keeping track of what happens anymore. The days seem to go all too fast. Every day, I wake up, wondering how I’m going to wake up and do something. When I go to school, everything is a haze. I have a hard time focusing on even the smallest things, and yet I still manage to keep most of my grades high enough to pass the class.

Life as a high school student is a repetitive and exhausting one, but it’s nothing compared to the life of the average adult. Most wake up every morning to go to a job that they do not enjoy. Some people enjoy what they do, but others would rather do anything else. I strive to do something with myself other than waiting out my time as a mere worker in an office cubicle, and although my grades may not reflect it, I try as hard as I can. My room is littered with staff paper, drumsticks, guitar picks, and pencils. People ask me what I do for fun, and all I have to do is show them a picture of my room. Sure, I may be somewhat of a gamer as well, but for the most part, I’m a musician. No doubt about that.

Writing music is so much harder than it looks. If I’m being honest, I’ve sometimes wanted to stop, because writing an original melody and original lyrics to go along with that melody is extremely challenging, but I never have, nor I ever will. More often than not, a major struggle I have with writing songs is writer’s block. I hate when I have a melody in my head but I can’t seem to make lyrics up. It’s strange really, as my first song came from something someone was going through and I thought about that, but other than that, most of them were just things that popped into my head. My song “Here with me” came to me while I was out hunting! How amazing the human mind is, to be sitting in nature thinking about those you care about, only for words to appear into your head, forming an entire song! Even my latest song, “Hiraeth” came from a video explaining the meaning of the word. (Hiraeth meaning a homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, or that never was.) Music is a mysterious, yet beautiful tool to bring love into the lives of so many people. It can be used to create or destroy. It can be a beautiful tool or a powerful weapon and should be handled with care.

I am proud to call myself a singer, a drummer, a guitarist, a pianist.

A musician. And although there are struggles that come with it, knowing that I can have the potential to change the world one song at a time is very fulfilling and makes everything worth it.

So while some may be satisfied living an ordinary life at an ordinary job, I will refuse to be ordinary, and strive to become extraordinary. Life comes once, and I’m not here to waste it being selfish and ordinary. I choose to help the world with a gift this world gave to me. This is how I am and this is how I will be.
