A Short Review Of The New Code of Character, Conduct, and Support
By Acacia Adams
The new Code of Character, Conduct, and Support in Wheatland-Chili HS has changed many things this upcoming school year, including the new consequence levels and procedures. Now that the code exists, there are different levels of offenses based on the seriousness of the crime one commits. Level one crimes include lateness for school without permission and infractions of the school’s dress code. If one were to do any of these things, one would have to speak with a teacher and concerns in behavior will be listed and tracked. This level has been at the school for a long time. However, a level that is new is level 2. Level 2 offenses include skipping school and excessive misconduct in the hallway.  If these occur, one would have to sit in a “restorative circle with everyone who was in the altercation. Levels 3 and 4 are the out of school and in school suspensions.
Level 2 has been the largest area of controversy. Some students believe that these codes are not beneficial to the climate and culture of Wheatland-Chili. They believe that sitting in a circle will not help to solve any problems. In fact, they believe the complications will become more problematic. Although these circles might work for the elementary school, some students think that for the high school the circle is unnecessary. Instead of sitting in a circle to solve problems, students believe it would be better to have a different protocol. Another thing we could do instead of the circle is use our school personnel such as Mr. Phillips and Ms. Keipper. They will help but only if the students want to talk about it.
