Malik Evans, Rochester’s Mayor-Elect By Anya Niven As the campaign website of mayoral-elect Malik Evans loads onto my computer screen, I see bold blue text that reads “Building Bridges.” Along with Evans’s campaign statement, this text overlays a photo of Rochester’s Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge.  A “Rochesterian” born and bred, Evans has been an active member of Rochester’s political community since his teenage years. At 16 years old, Evans was already making powerful contributions to his city by assisting in the formation of the City/County Youth Council. Evans continued his political contributions throughout his young adulthood and in 2003 became the “youngest person ever” [1] elected as a member of the Rochester Board of Education at age 23. Continuing his work within the Rochester City Council since his first election has made Evans a developed and familiar leader in the Rochester community. Malik Evans announced his campaign for Mayor of Rochester in January...
A Safe Space? By: Olivia Passmore This article is dedicated to Lizz Dettmer. A Safe Space? By: Olivia Passmore This article is dedicated to Lizz Dettmer. School is supposed to be a safe space. A comfortable space. A place where students should be able to express themselves in whatever way makes them happy. A place where students should be able to be themselves without boundaries holding them back. Well this may be the case for many students here; it is not the case for all of them. Transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming students do not always feel comfortable being themselves here. While there are many supportive faculty and students here, who embrace name and pronoun changes in an attempt to make students feel the most comfortable, there are still many who do not recognize the impact this change will have on these students. High school students are still developing, and figuring out ones gender identity can be a very difficult thing in a teenager’s life. Th...
Salmon By: Olivia Passmore In the Pacific Northwest, salmon are a vital part of the ecosystem. They provide sustenance to many different species such as the black bear, otters, killer whales, and many more. When a salmon is at the end of its life cycle, it will make its way upstream to lay their eggs, depositing nutrients throughout the journey; nutrients that the forest and ocean depend on. Today, several species of salmon in the PNW are on the brink of extinction. There are many reasons for this decrease in the population, the main one being that of the effects of climate change. As the air warms due to the rising global temperature, glaciers melt at a faster rate, meaning there will be less cold water to feed the streams during the summer. Warmer water makes the salmon more susceptible to predators and disease. This decrease in salmon will not only effect different animal species, but humans as well. In the PNW, salmon support 16,000 jobs in the commercial and recreational...
A Stanley Cup Run?    By: Madeline Reid    The Dallas Stars have had a slow but promising start to the 2021-22 season. They had a strong start with a season-opening 3-2 win in overtime over the NY Rangers, the Stars had a strong start. Over the next few games, the Stars struggled without top defenseman John Klingberg and forwards; Jason Robertson and Blake Comeau. The loss of these players led to losses in Boston and Ottawa. Their home opener was a success beating the LA Kings 3-2. The Stars struggle to keep the momentum going when entering and playing in the second period. Many of their losses have come from goals against them in the second period. There are many successful returning top scorers such as Roope Hintz, Tyler Seguin, Jason Robertson, and Joe Pavelski. A stacked defense that includes Miro Heiskanen, John Klingberg, and Esa Lindell. New promising players such as Michael  Raffl , Luke Glendenning, and Thomas Harley are starting to heat up,...
The Importance of Standing for the Flag   By: Terrance Bayly-Henshaw    Imagine tomorrow you had to pack one bag and leave your house, your family, your dog, your cat, and everything that comforts you in your own home  to go  to a completely foreign place .  While at this place you will push your body past its  limits  day in and day out and  function  on  minimal hours of sleep and  food that you can barely stomach .   It does not  sound fun, does it ?   This  is  the choice that our  military   members  make  in order to  protect our freedom and rights in the  U.S.    We owe all respect to those who leave the comfort of their life at home  and  put their lives on the line  to protect our freedom .   They have fought  time and time again  for a physical  embod i ment  of our freedom ,  the...

Thoughts and Feeling

By: Josh Lewis I’ve been told I have a way with words. I express my gratitude in a large heartfelt paragraph explaining why the person means so much to me. I don’t know how I got this way. I guess it’s just because that’s how my brain functions. I need to have every detail perfect and explained. I cannot miss one thing or I get upset. It helps when I write music and poetry or even things like this. I like writing. It’s therapeutic. It allows me to express thoughts to myself that I don’t tell other people about. I struggle with things that I don’t want to dump on other people and I come to my computer and type all of it out. I use writing in my music My music is heavily influenced by my thoughts and life occurrences. Sometimes, I’ll come back to these long paragraphs that I write to preview my thoughts and then incorporate them into my music. I often find myself not knowing what to do for my music, but with some of my thoughts all laid out in front of me. I will be hon...

A Poem

When the winding ticks, click in my ear Air weighs loaded with fear Once a mild worry has come to a reality, The devastation runs and makes a castastrophe We thought we were okay, some thought we flew; If only we saw what the Blackbird knew. The Blackbird is chained trapped in a cage the air comes in brimming hostility. Clouds attempt to grasp the Key the master once owned If the Shadows attempt they Will get Stoned. Do we need the Key can we break the cage Do we need it,  Because Blackbird is on stage Wait three-four seconds curtains close.  Might continues more, brains fold A crack in the cage gave what hope?
